Why We’re Starting a Travel Adventure

Hi! We’re the King- Richard family- Lealand (45), Nate (46), Asher (13) and Delphine (4). We’re starting Elsewhere Together as a way of documenting our travel adventures as a family. Ever since our honeymoon to Costa Rica back in 2006, Nate and I have been enthralled by travel. Few things make me happier than sitting down with a stack of guidebooks from the library and researching a new destination.

In our late 20s, after a few initial trips planned with a local travel agency, we went to Italy for the first time. When we returned, I immediately began brainstorming “How can we do this again? How can we build this into our lives in a regular way?” Through trial and error, we became more comfortable searching for our own airfare, finding unique places to stay, and planning itineraries that were a little quirkier and off the beaten path.

After the birth of our son Asher, most people close to us assumed we would put traveling on hold until he was a bit older. However, after a year without travel during my pregnancy and in Asher’s earliest infancy, we were feeling the pull of the larger world. When he was 9 months old, we thought, “We’ll just give this a try, and then we’ll know if it’s too hard”. While that trip, a return to Italy, was not without its challenges, once we were there, we knew that travel with a baby was possible. We knew we could do it, because we had already done it! We’ve traveled twice yearly with Asher ever since, and when Delphine was born in 2020, as soon as the pandemic had abated enough to make travel safe again, we were off, now with two kids in tow. We feel that travel binds our family together in a singular way. We share memories and funny stories that we would never have had otherwise.

I’m an artist and art educator, and Nathan is a marketing executive with a background in graphic design, so we always approach our trips with an eye for the artistic and unusual. We love finding experiences that are slightly off the beaten path. Over the years, we’ve had so many unique adventures, and we are starting Elsewhere Together with the idea that maybe others will find the particulars of our travels interesting or helpful. We plan to share photos, itineraries of things we’ve seen and information and strategies that have worked for us to make travel with young children just a little bit easier. Welcome, and we hope you enjoy following our adventures!
